I’ve never had much luck with other text-to-image applications finding the right combination of words to get what I envision. Time after time Adobe Firefly generated usable, elegant cameras that could I could composite with other images of steampunk laptops. Or I could continue generating images or variations on results until I found something that sang to me.

It’s set to make the life of creators a whole lot easier – and that is never a bad thing. Users should be able to access the feature right away, with a roll-out to the non-beta version expected later this year. DreamStudio using the SDXL beta model did a better job with the cameras than Adobe Firefly. It just couldn’t give me a usable image that actually fit the prompt. So from a workflow point of view, it’s a lot harder to get an end result than with Firefly because of the compositing work that would be required.

As I say I just edited a real wedding and while I normally take zero percent of my photos into photoshop, I probably took 20 or so images into photoshop because this new tool is amazing at two things. Moreover, colour correction plays an essential role in glamour retouching. If you zoom in really close, then the results do start to fall apart as they do have a fake generated look to them, but at first glance and for a few minutes of work, this is truly phenomenal stuff. You must remember that the tool is based on patterns and Machine Learning. There may be times when it doesn’t produce the expected results due to the vast variability of photographic scenarios. As for patterns, activating the ‘Scale’ or ‘Mirror’ options can yield more consistent Fills. Yes, Generative Fill works alongside Photoshop’s other editing tools, meaning you can easily fine-tune your results. It seems you can’t open any app or website these days without being faced with a new AI-powered feature and Photoshop is no different.

The second is the same photo but with the storm clouds slightly ‘enhanced’ using the adaptive function. You cannot turn a cloudless sky into a stormy sky at the click of a mouse. Gone are the days when Photoshop was merely used to remove blemishes or adjust lighting.
